what are we anyway?
we must not have had
much choice in the decisions
that ultimately made us human
for who among us can honestly claim
they would selectively prefer
upright legs over flight
or daylight hours over
bright moonlight
sleeping prone to
snuggling in a pack of furry sisters
acne is a sorry destiny when compared
with the slick skin and tails of dolphins
even as our guttural moans make me
hot and groan
whale song is nothing short of
miraculously sexy
undeniably there is dignity
in each tall cedar tree
growing over hundreds of years
sheltering home to millions of creatures
in the course of pursing its grandest views
even dirt gets to be mother to
pretty much every single living species
in contrast primate breeding is just measly
let’s be honest and break down and just face it
deep inside we know all the havoc we’ve been wreaking
is nothing more than ineffective reaching
a lame attempt at overcompensation
if not for that one persistent idea
again
of the simplest consolation
our words and the other worlds
they make our most tender heartfelt
creations
